Curricular reform of heritage sciences in Bosnia and Herzegovina


In spring 2012, on the initiative of the Chair in Archaeology (University of Sarajevo) and Department of Archaeology (University of Ljubljana) a consortium for BIHERIT project was established. 

Composed of departments of archaeology from 5 EU universities (Ljubljana, Primorska, Berlin, Vienna, Cambridge), 3 universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla), , and 3 other institutions (Bosnia and Herzegovina National Commission to Preserve National Monuments, National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Museum of Republic of Srpska), the consortium's application was was selected for funding in 2012 TEMPUS call for joint projects.  Early in 2013 two partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina were replaced: Museum of Travnik replaced the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina (temporary closed down), and museum of Kozara, Prijedor replaced Museum of Republic of Srpska.

main objectives of the project

1. MARH - Curricular reform of archaeology the MA level at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo (modernization of the existing curriculum)

2. HERITAGE - Development and introduction of heritage studies (art history, conservation studies, museum studies, heritage protection, heritage management) as curricular modules at the departments of history at several the universities of Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Tuzla 

3. Capacity building for sustainable continuation of the curricular reform in the post-project period (infrastructure: equipment, libraries, human resources, networking) 

4. Promotion of cultural heritage as common value, value increasing quality of life and contributing to sustainable development 

BIHERIT project officially started on 15th of October 2012 and will continue until 30th September 2014, it covers the time-span of two academic years.
